COURSE IN PRENATAL GENETIC DIAGNOSTIC 2009
A course on Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis will be held for the first time in Goldrain Castle, from 20 till 24 September, 2009. Goldrain Castle, which is surrounded by vineyards and orchards and awe inspiring Tyrolian mountain peaks, provides an ideal environment for the course.
For further information about the focus of the course, venue, access, and registration as well as a provisional programme and a pre-registration form please see below.
Focus of the course
The lectures (provisional programme) are aimed at both obstetricians and clinical and laboratory geneticists who have strong mutual interests in each other’s field. In order to have the maximum profit from the lectures and exercises, participants should have at least one year of practical experience in prenatal obstetric diagnosis and/or clinical genetics. Besides the lectures, there is room for discussions, practical work on databases, student presentations, and at the end a non-compulsory multiple-choice examination. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate the course in general and each lecture and exercise in particular, using a standardized evaluation form. One afternoon will be reserved for an excursion.
Venue
Goldrain Castle (http://www.schloss-goldrain.com) in South Tyrol /Northern Italy is a conference and education centre run by a foundation with support from the local authorities of South Tyrol. The castle was founded in the 12th century; its present buidings date back mostly to the 15th and 16th century. The centre offers conference and seminar rooms, one computer room equipped with 14 computers for practical training, a restaurant for the participants, and a dormitory with about 40 beds in single and double rooms. Participants can also stay in one of the hotels close by. Food is excellent: a combination of local (Tyrolian) and Italian cuisine. As most of the inhabitants of South Tyrol are German speaking, all the places have double names, in German and in Italian. The castle is situated in the Etsch/Adige valley about 30 km west of Meran/Merano. Mountains surrounding the valley are between 3000 and 4000m high. The valley is known for an amazing richness of old castles and churches, mainly from the Romanic and Gothic periods.
Access to internet is provided in the computer room during the day and is free of charge.
Duration
This is a four-day course, 20 – 24 September, and includes a half-day excursion. As travelling to the site of the course requires nearly a whole day, we start with dinner on the day of arrival and end after breakfast on the day of departure, i.e. a total of 5 nights with arrival on 29 August afternoon and departure on 3 September after breakfast.
Access
Goldrain is connected by train to Meran and thus accessible by public transport. For those participants who travel by air, the closest smaller airports are at Innsbruck, Bozen/Bolzano and Verona, and larger airports are at Munich and Milan. One should allow about 5 hours for the train journey from both Milan and Munich.
From Milan to Goldrain: from Milan Central station take the train to Venice and change at Verona (1½ hours). From Verona take a train in the direction of Bozen/Bolzano, Brenner/Brennero, Innsbruck and Muenchen and change at Bozen (1½ hours from Verona) for a train to Meran. At Meran take a train to Mals and get off at Goldrain-Morter/Coldrano-Morter (Bozen-Goldrain about 1½ hours). The castle is a 10-15 minutes walk from Goldrain train station. There is the possibility of picking you up or transporting only your luggage, provided we know the time of your arrival.

The language of the course is English. Although in general the mother tongue of the natives in Goldrain and in South Tyrol (Province of Bozen/Bolzano) is German, they all understand Italian but little, if any, English. However, communication has never been a major problem in previous courses. During the course, two secretaries, one from Switzerland and one from Italy, will be able to help you with all your queries and any issues that may arise. Both are fluent in English.
Course documents
Each participant will receive a folder containing all abstracts and powerpoint presentations, the final program, other useful information and a list of all students and lecturers. The list of the students will be sent to you 2-3 weeks prior to the start of the course in order to enable you to contact collegues for the purpose of travelling together.
